First paediatric simultaneous bilateral cochlear implant surgery
09 Dec 2024We are happy to announce the successful completion of our first paediatric simultaneous bilateral cochlear implant surgery at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road.
In this surgery, which marks a significant milestone for the ENT department, we operated on a 3-year-old profoundly deaf child and placed the Nucleus CI 632 implant. This implant is the thinnest, latest, and most reliable available today, featuring access to 3T MRI technology. It is designed for minimal drilling, allowing for ease of use and streamlined surgery.
Bilateral implantation with 632 electrodes can provide better hearing in quiet and challenging listening environments, which we most often encounter in real-life scenarios.
The Good-Design Award-winning SmartNav technology provides wireless, real-time, actionable insights during cochlear implant surgery, delivering added assurance about placement and performance. This cutting-edge iPad-based solution offers an intuitive workflow, providing real-time feedback for in-theatre decision-making regarding angular depth and speed of insertion.
The child, born deaf and mute, will now undergo post-operative rehabilitation (auditory verbal therapy) and is expected to integrate into mainstream schooling within the next year.
